The New Year Starts Off Running
Greensboro running events start on Jan 1st with the annual Resolution Run at Camp Weaver. This event is for the entire family and includes a fun run for kids, a 1 mile run and a 5k through the beautiful trails of Camp Weaver. The 2016 event was well attended and include three local news networks covering the activities.
As I listened to the testimonial of Paula Pile it was like looking at myself in a mirror. In the Spring of “2012” I was smoking a pack of cigarettes a day and was 50+ pounds over weigh. Out of shape is being very kind. I contracted an intestinal virus that put me out of commission for 10 days. No desire to eat, drink or even smoke. When I starting feeling better I thought to myself I have a 10 day start on a diet and quitting smoking. We need to do this.
I started a regiment of brisk walking on a daily basis and gradually converting walking to running. I had ran Cross Country and track in Junior High under the tutelage of my favorite teacher/coach. I enjoyed the rush and collected a number of winning ribbons. By summer I had converted to 100% run and was working on extending the distance of my daily run. I decided to enter a 5k run scheduled for September 20th at Camp Caraway in Sophia as a target for serious training. I worked my distance per run to 5k and was continuously working on time.
Race day arrived and the butterflies were fluttering in my stomach. The starting gun went off and the rest is history. It was a cross country coarse and intense to say the least. I finished with a time of 32:02 which enabled me to collect 1st Place in the Male 50-54 Age Group.
Since then I have participated in over 100 races and have collected a number of trophies and metals. My weekly goal is 20-25 miles in at least 5 workouts minimum. In the Fall of “2014” I decided to look into the idea of starting my own timing company. After over 100 experiences I knew what I liked and didn’t like at the events. I said to myself “I can do better”.
In December I found out Precision Timing Systems was closing down and was potentially for sale. Their last event was the Reindeer Romp 5k at the Ragsdale YMCA in Jamestown that I was already registered to race in. I decided to go to the venue early and talk to the current owners of Precision. I talked to the two partners and we met a couple times over the holidays. By the end of January, 2015 I was the new owner of Precision Timing Systems. The business is now re-branded as Finish Line Timing of North Carolina.
One of my goals was to create an event in the Triad on New Years Day. We partnered with the Greensboro area YMCA’s to help them create a race series for “2015”. After a number of meetings the idea of combining the resources of the Spears YMCA at the Camp Weaver facility started to come to light. After months of discussions the Spears YMCA Resolution Trail Run at Camp Weaver was a reality.
Make sure you look for the “2017 version of event.
